What is Quenching

Refers to the steel heated to Ac3 or Ac1 (the lower critical point temperature of steel) above a certain temperature,

maintained for a certain period of time, and then the appropriate cooling rate, to obtain the martensite (or bainite) organization of

the heat treatment process.

Common quenching processes include salt bath quenching, martensitic graded quenching, bainitic isothermal quenching,

surface quenching and localized quenching.

What is the purpose of quenching

The purpose of quenching is to make the supercooled austenite martensite or bainite transformation, martensite or bainite organization,

and then with different temperatures of tempering, in order to significantly improve the strength, hardness, wear resistance, fatigue strength

and toughness of steel, so as to meet the different requirements of various mechanical parts and tools. Can also be quenched to meet some

special steel ferromagnetism, corrosion resistance and other special physical and chemical properties.
