Y4 STEEL CHARACTERISTICS


Y4 steel, officially designated as 4Cr3Mo2MnVNbB, is a new type of hot work mold steel specifically designed for copper alloy die-casting molds in China. It is marked as the fourth steel used for die-casting molds, abbreviated as Y4.


It is worth mentioning that the addition of trace elements Nb and B can stabilize carbides and refine grains. The carbide of Nb is difficult to dissolve in austenite, so it can improve the stability of M6C and MC type carbides, reduce overheating sensitivity, and thus improve thermal strength and stability. These characteristics make Y4 steel significantly superior to 1.2581 steel in terms of mechanical properties, especially in terms of cold and hot fatigue and crack propagation rate. It is considered an ideal copper alloy die casting material and can significantly improve the service life of the mold.


The heat treatment process of Y4 steel is relatively simple, usually using quenching and high-temperature tempering treatment. The quenching temperature is generally 1050-1100 ℃, oil cooled or air cooled; The tempering temperature is 550-650 ℃, and the holding time is determined according to the hardness requirements. After such heat treatment, Y4 steel can achieve high hardness, high strength, and good toughness.


In practical applications, the application range of Y4 steel is very wide. Due to its good high-temperature strength and wear resistance, it is often used to manufacture molds that need to withstand higher temperatures and pressures. For example, Y4 steel is widely used in non-ferrous metal die-casting molds such as aluminum, magnesium, and zinc. In addition, Y4 steel is widely used in manufacturing fields such as plastic molds, hot forging forming molds, and cold stamping molds.
